What is a Remote Work Visa (Also Known as a Digital Nomad Visa)?
A Remote Work Visa, in terms of section 11(1) of the Immigration Act, 2002 is a short-term visitor’s visa that allows foreign nationals who meet the prescribed requirements to sojourn and work remotely in South Africa for a foreign entity for a period not exceeding 36 months.
Can I apply for permanent residency in South Africa with a Remote Work Visa?
The Remote Work Visa is not a pathway to permanent residency or any long-term visa. Applicants interested in permanent residency would need to explore other visa options available in South Africa as one may not change conditions in the country.
How long is a Remote Work Visa valid for?
The Remote Work Visa can only be issued for a maximum period of 12 months and may be renewed in country for a further period of 36 months.
Who is eligible to apply for a Remote Work Visa (Digital Nomad Visa)?
Individuals who are employed by a foreign entity and earn an annual salary from the same foreign entity in excess of the equivalent of ZAR 650 976.00 (estimated USD 37,000/ EUR 34,000).
Do I need a job offer from a South African employer to apply for a Remote Work Visa?
No, a job offer from a local employer is not required. Instead, applicants need to show that they are employed by a foreign entity and can work remotely from South Africa.
An Applicant cannot work for a South African employer while on a Remote Work Visa.
Can I travel freely into South Africa while holding a Remote Work Visa?
Yes, holders of a Remote Work Visa will enjoy unrestricted travel in and out of South Africa during the validity period of the visa.
